TEC - About Us

In 2007, GOTAFE was the first Registered Training Organisation to establish a TEC within Victoria at Wangaratta. Following the success of the Wangaratta TEC initiative, GOTAFE is offering a wider educational experience to Goulburn Valley secondary school students in 2008.

TECs provide a new senior secondary education and training option for young people who want to pursue a vocational and technical career. TECs are a fantastic model for giving students job-ready skills and a solid base on which to add further qualifications.

Key to the success of TECs is the provision of a holistic approach that supports students through their education and training, work and life opportunities.

Shepparton TEC

The Shepparton TEC is a result of a review of secondary provision in the Shepparton and surrounding districts (Nathalia, Numurkah and Cobram) by the Hume Region of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

GOTAFE is establishing a Shepparton TEC at the William Orr Campus in Wanganui Road in 2008 to run intermediate and senior industry VCAL programs for Year 11 and 12 students to improve and expand the range of vocational education and training opportunities for young people in 2008 and beyond.

GOTAFE will offer 10 industry focussed VCAL programs to Year 11 and Year 12 students from around the Shepparton region in 2008. The William Orr Campus will provide access to industry standard and state-of-the-art equipment and resources.

Wangaratta TEC

The Wangaratta Technical Education Centre (TEC) is an initiative of the Victorian Government, Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE (GOTAFE) and Wangaratta High School, and is the first of four TEC to be established in Victoria.

The Wangaratta TEC offers young people, 15-20 years of age, a high quality and full-time vocational education and training (VET) in an adult learning environment.

Opportunities include the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL), Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), both with a VET emphasis, school based apprenticeships and traineeships and non school-based traineeships and pre-apprenticeships. These courses lead to a wide range of rewarding and well paid careers, and pathways leading to higher levels of study at TAFE Institutes in gaining a national qualification at a Certificate III or IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma level.

Students are also provided with full pastoral care, support from pathway planners, advocates or industry mentors, as well as access to extra-curricula activities such as sport, leadership, excursions, camps and social activities.

The Wangaratta TEC is to be permanently located at GOTAFE - in the heart of Wangaratta’s educational precinct. The TEC opened in February 2007 in interim accommodation at the Vincent Road Campus of Wangaratta High School.  Relocation to GOTAFE will occur in early 2009.
