Cabinet Making
The Shepparton Technical Education Centre (TEC) is celebrating another success story with Year 10 Nathalia Secondary College student, Lauchlan Smith being offered an apprenticeship after participating in work placements.
Lauchlan was enrolled in a TEC Building and Construction course which formed part of his Year 10 study program. Whilst undertaking the course he completed two placements with builders and one with a cabinet maker and was keen to secure an apprenticeship in the field.
When another work placement vacancy became available at Shepparton's Cut 'n Ready, Lauchlan immediately jumped at the chance and with the help of TEC Employment Pathways Officer, Narelle Lowe, he applied for the position and included his excellent work placement reports as evidence of his employability skills.
Ms Lowe visited the worksite to provide a report on Lauchlan and feedback from his other work placement employers. "A work placement was organised to commence on September 1 but the employer rang me back to say they had decided to move straight into an apprenticeship," said Ms Lowe. "Lauchlan is thrilled with the opportunity to commence in his chosen trade earlier."
"Work placements are an integral part of the TEC program," said Ms Lowe. "The aim is to assist students gain practical trade skills which combined with their secondary school education ensure they are work ready. We connect students with employers to gain some real industry experience and sometimes a student shows such potential they are snapped up by employers looking for a new apprentice. This was certainly the case with Lauchlan," said Ms Lowe.
