Shannon Hicks, Shepparton
Hairdressing
Year 10 Notre Dame student Shannon Hicks had her sights set on becoming a hairdresser and chose the TEC to help her gain more practical experience in the field.
Shannon says she really enjoyed the practical work associated with the TEC and is glad her careers teacher recommended the TEC as an option.
"I chose to do the TEC in Year 10 with the hope that it would give me a better chance at getting a job," said Shannon. "My first round of work placement at Vishair in Shepparton lead to a second round in the July school holidays and during that time I was offered an apprenticeship by the owner, Heidi Moylan."
Shannon started immediately with the apprenticeship and is really enjoying her work. She recommends the TEC to anyone wanting to gain hands-on experience and says the combination of school and the TEC was not difficult. "My school really supported me and my mum was very happy with the program."
"I like meeting new people and I made lots of friends in the TEC program. It was a good alternative to a regular school program. The TEC is different from school and I really looked forward to attending," said Shannon.
