Certificate II in Agriculture

This program is designed to develop knowledge and skills for people wishing to enter the agricultural industry and gain the basic skills for working under supervision on a farm. It is offered to people still attending school, either as a part time school-based apprentice, a Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) / Vocational Education & Training or VCAL student. It attracts an extra 10% on the student's 5th subject for their ENTER score for VCE.

Career Opportunities

Areas of interest for participants of this course can include all aspects of rural agricultural work including, stock agents, operating machinery and equipment and employment in the service industries.

Dairy Production: Employment prospects in all dairy related industries, breeding, milk management, stock management etc.

Poultry Production: Trainees can further their studies into Certificate III, IV and above which may to lead to employment in managerial positions.

Horse Breeding: Employment prospects in the equine, horse breeding or agricultural related industries.

Pig Production: Upon successful completion, learners can progress to higher certificate levels in pig production.

Entry Requirements

To gain admission to the course applicants must have an interest in agriculture, be currently enrolled at a Victorian Secondary School and be able to participate in work placement/ employment on a farm. All participants must be able to attend off-the-job training when scheduled.

Duration & Delivery

The program is conducted on a part time basis over 2 years. During this period the participant will attend one of the NCDEA Campuses for a minimum of 20 days off-the-job training and will either participate in a work placement on a farm, managed by their school for the VCE/VET option or will work as a part time New Apprentice employed on a farm to gain the on-the-job experience.

Assessment

Participants are assessed via completion of required tasks and a demonstration of skills, eg written and verbal assignments, practical work, classroom participation, projects and/or written tests.

Qualification

The Certificate II in Agriculture is a nationally recognised qualification.

Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC)

RCC is an assessment process that involves re-assessment of a previously gained accredited qualification that may no longer be recognised by official bodies. If you have an earlier qualification and have current industry experience, the RCC process will involve assessment of your prior qualification against the current qualification and if successful will result in a full or partial upgrade to the current qualification. Contact the teaching department for further advice on RCC or request an information brochure from the Customer Service Centre.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is an evidence gathering assessment process where an individual's skills and knowledge in a specific vocational area are assessed against a unit or units of a nationally accredited training package. RPL is specifically for applicants who have skills and knowledge in a vocational area that may enable them to gain part or all of a formal qualification thus recognizing their non-formal and informal prior learning. Contact the teaching department for further advice on RPL or request an information brochure from the Customer Service Centre.
